Hello, my name is Angie Wake, and I'm a teacher. I'm more than that actually, but it is absolutely part of my identity. I'm currently teaching third grade in northern Illinois. I've been at my school for 13 years and have been in several different positions. I have a Masters in Reading Instruction and am currently working on a Masters in Instructional Media through Wilkes University. I love to connect with other teachers who are passionate about technology integration and reading engagement.
I have a class website that I use to post pictures of special events throughout the day, link weekly newsletters, share my reading life and educational websites, and more. Families are encouraged to visit this website often as a way to keep informed about our classroom!
I use Twitter in my classroom mostly to connect with authors, illustrators, technology based apps, parents and our "buddy class" in Massachusetts. Follow us on Twitter and see what's new in our classroom!
My school district does a great job of maintaining a positive presence on social media. We have a Facebook page and a Twitter page. When a school has a special event or celebration, a member of our district office is invited to come and report to our community. I believe this has made a positive impact on our schools and families as people feel more involved!
My students do have access to a class Kidblog account. I typically keep our blogs private and for our class only, however, I have opened one of our threads to the public so that the author we talked about could use our predictions for her own blog! Check out our Kidblog and Victoria Coe's Blog!
At this point in time, I do not maintain a presence on any other social media site professionally. I do not have a Flickr account, but it's been something I'm considering as I learn more about it. It just seems like an easy way to store and share photos. I'd also like to start an Educlipper with my students, but we just simply have not had time.
I have created some projects using various Web 2.0 tools through my courses at Wilkes. This Spotlight on Strategies was created using Smore, this Glogster was created for our immigration unit, this Prezi about reading engagement, and this Google Site on an inquiry based unit about Earth's Systems.
I am quite thankful that my courses through Wilkes so far have guided me to use new tools that can be easily implemented with my students. I'm also thankful that I have added more Web 2.0 tools to my bag of tricks when it comes to curation, artistic, presentation and social networking tools. My "social media" resume will continue to grow over time to benefit my students.
